About the novel
At five, Alejandro Santiago was torn from his mother and siblings during El Salvador’s civil war. At twenty-one, he lives in Florida under the control of Jared Whitmore—his American father, a military veteran whose consulting firm conceals a transnational smuggling empire.
When the empire’s Salvadoran routes are threatened, Jared offers Alejandro power, money, and a path back to the family he has mourned for sixteen years.
The price is Maria.
Alejandro must persuade his adopted sister, who once protected him, to compromise her anti-narcotics officer husband and shield Jared’s operation. But Maria is more than leverage. For sixteen years, she has haunted Alejandro’s memory as the sister he lost. Now she is alive and within reach—the person he is most fiercely loyal to, and the one person he cannot bear to exploit.
Their mother, Ana, survived the war as a revolutionary and emerged as a political force. In Alejandro, she sees both the son stolen from her and an heir capable of carrying her revolution into power. Jared sees something else: a contender he can sharpen against JJ, the older brother raised to believe the criminal empire is already his.
And Moni—Alejandro’s volatile lover, now inside the operation—may be the FBI’s way into Jared’s empire.
